Highways England (HE), a part of the Department for Transport (DfT), England is planning to undertake the construction of an expressway from Oxford to Cambridge in England, the UK.
The project involves the construction of a 150km expressway corridor between the M1 and M40 motorways. It includes the construction of a dual carriage way, barriers, bridges, pedestrian ways and the installation of overhead signals and street lights.
In October 2015, DfT commissioned USS$792,028 for the strategic study on the project. The comprehensive study forms an integral part of the government’s Road Investment Strategy.
HE appointed WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff, Halcrow (a CH2M Hill Company), and Steer Davies Gleave as a joint venture to lead a strategic study for building a road link between Oxford, Milton Keynes, and Cambridge.
The strategic study reports on the project were released in August 2016 and November 2016.
In December 2016, DfT set out three shortlisted route options for the project. The three expressway include route options via Aylesbury, the East West Rail corridor, and the existing A421 corridor.
On July 31, 2017, Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (Jacobs) was awarded the US$19.7 contract over two years to undertake the identification of corridor and route options, engineering assessment, stakeholder management and project management to progress the project through options development.
In January 2018, meeting was held to discuss the broad paths of the possible route.
Study activities are underway.
