Summary

The Orion-Long King (OLK), a joint venture between Orion Group and Long King is undertaking the construction of Maowa Coal Fired Power Plant project in Munshiganj, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The project involves the construction of the coal-based power plant with the capacity of 522MW. It includes the construction of a coal washing unit, water transmission pipeline, raw water storage tanks, switchyard for power evacuation, powerhouse and the installation of generators and the laying of transmission lines.

In November 2010, BPDB has invited RFQ bids with the submission deadline of December 30, 2010.

On June 27, 2012, Orion-Long King was appointed as the build own operate (BOO) contractor with a concession period of 25 years.

In 2012, the project reached financial closure.

Ramboll Danmark A/S has been appointed to assist ORN in planning and design process.

In July 2013, Orion applied for the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) to Department of Environment (DoE).

However, the EIA approvals were delayed for a long time by DoE and approvals were issued in July 2015, with a conditions to install flue-gas desulfurization equipment.

In January 2016, the project was kept on hold, due to delay caused by a slow bureaucracy in getting environmental clearance. Later, OLK revived the project plans.

As of August 2017, OLK is in the process of acquiring land for project implementation.

Scope

The Maowa Coal Fired Power Plant project involves the construction of a 522MW coal based power plant in Munshiganj, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The US$579 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of a coal washing unit

2. Construction of water transmission pipeline

3. Construction of raw water storage tanks

4. Construction of switch-yard for power evacuation

5. Construction of a powerhouse

6. Installation of generators

7. Laying of transmission lines
