The UK Department for Transport (DfT) is planning to undertake the constsruction of Heathrow Rail Hub project in London, the UK.
The project involves the construction of a railway hub. It includes the construction of railway lines, pedestrian ways, platforms, the installation of rail tracks.
The new rail hub will connect regional rail services on the Great Western Main Line to Heathrow, making the airport more accessible to the West, South West, Wales and the Midlands and also provide a direct train service between the Thames Gateway and the Thames Valley.
The Heathrow Hub will involves the extension of High Speed 1 from London’s St Pancras International station to the airport, and would enable high-speed trains to go from Heathrow via the Channel Tunnel to continental destinations.
Arup has been appointed as the lead consultant and Jacobs UK Limited as study consultant for the project.
Transport secretary Philip Hammond rejected the project in July 2010, by stating the reason that Government is not in favor of mixed-mode operation at Heathrow.
In July 2012, DfT announced plans to invest US$782 million to build a new rail link from Great Western Main Line, east of Slough to Heathrow Terminal 5.
On July 7, 2014, the government committed to fund the new rail link from Slough to London Heathrow Airport under Local Growth Fund deals.
In February 2016, second round of public consultation is underway on the project.
