New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is planning to undertake the construction of Kaimai Ranges Road Tunnel project in Kaimai Ranges, New Zealand. The preferred route for the tunnel is yet to be finalized.
The project involves the construction of a road tunnel through the Kaimai Ranges linking Tauranga with the Waikato. It will include the construction of ventilation shafts, and access roads, the installation of ventilators, fire fighting and communication system.
In 2010, NZTA started investigating three routes for the proposed tunnel. One option involves building a road tunnel near the existing rail tunnel; another is building a tunnel near Thompsons Track, between Katikati and Apata. The third option, known as a summit-level tunnel, involves building a tunnel half-way up the existing alignment of State Highway 29.
Feasibility study is underway to finalize the route.
