The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is undertaking the upgrade of road between Baypark and Bayfair in Tauranga, New Zealand.
The project involves the upgrade of the State Highway 2 (SH2) between Baypark and Bayfair in phases.
The first phase includes the construction of railway road with 30,000m3 to 50,000m3 of earthworks and the upgrade of the road with 200,000m3 to 250,000m3 of earthworks. The second phase includes the construction of two flyovers; the first directing State Highway 29A traffic over the East Coast railway line and Te Maunga intersection, and the other directing State Highway 2 traffic up and over the Maunganui-Girven roundabout.
It also includes upgrades to Maunganui-Girven intersection, the Te Maunga roundabout replaced with an elevated interchange, walking and cycling connections improved between Baypark and Bayfair, relocating train tracks, construction of pedestrian walkways, a cycle path from Owens Place to Baypark, and the installation of signaling and safety systems.
In December 2014, NZTA has approved $4 million in funding for initial design of the project.
In December 2015, Fulton Hogan was awarded a contract for earthworks for the first phase.
In December 2015, the construction works on the first phase commenced.
KiwiRail Holdings Limited has been appointed to construct the foundation for the track (ballast), laying new track and installing signals and Beca as the civil engineer.
In December 2016, the work on the first phase completed.
In April 2017, CPB Contractors Pty Ltd was appointed as the design-build contractor for the second phase of the project and received a formal appointment for the construction works in May 2017.
On May 16, 2017, groundbreaking ceremony was held and construction work commenced.
Construction activities are underway and expected to complete by 2020.
