Summary

Northern Railway (NR) is undertaking the construction of Kashmir Railway Line project in Jammu & Kashmir, India.

The project involves the construction of a 345km railway line. The project is being executed in four sections namely:

Section I will include the construction of Jammu to Udhampur (53km) rail line; Section II will include the construction of Udhampur to Katra (25km) rail line, Section III will include the construction of Katra to Qazigund (148km) rail line, and Section IV will include the construction of Baramulla to Qazigund (119km) rail line.

The project will include the construction of 165 major bridges, 696 minor bridges, tunnels of 121km length and 30 railway stations. The tunnel is being bored using tunnel boring machine (TBM) and constructed using Drill & Blast method.

Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) and IRCON have been appointed as associate developers for the project.

Geodata Engineering S.p.A has been awarded a contract worth US$163 million to carry out the design consultancy services for the Katra to Qazigund section.

NR will undertake the construction works for the first 5km, KRCL will undertake the construction works for the next 67km and IRCON will undertake the construction works for the last 67km of the Katra to Qazigund section.

Several foreign companies are involved as sub-contractors, including a joint venture involving India-based AFCONS Infrastructure, Ultra Construction and Engineering Co of South Korea, Gammon India and Archirodon construction of South Africa.

Foreign consultants involved in the project are Switzerland-based Amberg Consultancy Firm, and Geo Consult of Austria, Consulting Kortes of Finland, and Leonhardt Andra Und Partner, Germany.

The Jammu to Udhampur section was opened to the public in 2005, while Qazigund to Baramulla route was completed in 2009.

In October 2013, the construction work on Udhampur to Katra rail line section of the project was completed and commissioning is being delayed.

In January 2014, IRCON appointed Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) to construct one tunnel and two bridges between Dharam and Qazigund section.

On October 19, 2015, ICRON issued a tender for the construction of a bridge on Katra-Dharam section of the project with the submission deadline on December 4, 2015.

On October 30, 2015, ICRON issued a tender for the construction of tunnel (T-2) on Katra–Banihal section of the project with the submission deadline on December 3, 2015.

In March 2016, Afcons Infrastructure Limited was awarded a contract for the construction of various bridges.

On July 26, 2016, Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) was awarded a US$260 million contract from IRCON to construct two tunnels (T13 & part of T14) of 12.8 km along with parallel safety tunnels and a 200m bridge adjoining these two tunnels and a station yard at Basindadhar on Katra - Banihal Section of Udhampur - Srinagar - Baramulla BG Railway Line. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 30 months from the commence start date.

On January 9, 2017, Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) was awarded a US$55 million contract from IRCON to construct cable stayed bridge including its approaches across river Anji Khad. The bridge will connect tunnel T2 and T3 on Katra-Banihal Section of Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link project.

On July 31, 2017, NR issued a tender to appoint a contractor to undertake fabrication, supply, erection and completing of the superstructure for bridge works of Katra-Qazigund Section with the submission deadline on August 30, 2017.

Construction activities on Katra to Quazigund line section are underway and the project is expected to be completed by 2020.

Scope

The project involves the construction of a 345km railway line in Jammu and Kashmir, India.

The US$2,050 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of Jammu to Udhampur rail link covering a distance of 53km

2. Construction of Udhampur to Katra rail link covering a distance of 25km

3. Construction of Katra to Quazigund rail link covering a distance of 148km

4. Construction of Baramulla to Qazigund rail link covering a distance of 119km
