Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPN), the subsidiary of Exxon Mobil, are undertaking the Qua Iboe Terminal gas-fired power plant project in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
The project involves the construction of a 533MW gas-fired power plant.
It includes the construction of a powerhouse, substations and other related facilities, the laying of 56km transmission lines, the installation of gas pipelines, turbines and generators.
The power plant will provide 330kV export power to the Nigerian national power grid. The 330kV double circuit transmission line (TLine) between QIT, Ibeno and Ikot Abasi will be connected to the Nigerian electric power grid at Ikot Abasi.
General Electric (GE) has been appointed as the technical consultant on the project, where GE would also produce 400mmscuf of gas per day in excess of the requirement of the power plant when completed. The excess gas would however be made available to other power plants in need of additional gas supply.
In September 2009, GOPA-International Energy Consultants GmbH & ILF Engineers have been appointed to provide Front End Engineering Design (FEED) services on the project. The GOPA-International Energy Consultants GmbH scope of work includes the preparing the design and technical specifications for the 500MW combined cycle power plant (FEED 1), a 330kV double-circuit transmission line between Qko Ibo and Ikot Abasi (nearly 56km) and the associated switchyard and substation.
ILF scope of work includes the topographical and geotechnical surveys, EIA for the transmission line, the issue of construction documentation for the fuel gas piping across QIT, preparation of the Invitation To Tender (ITT) documents and criteria to evaluate the bids in the subsequent phase of EPC tendering.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has issued MPN the requisite power generation license.
On May 6, 2014, World Bank approved fund of US$150 million for the development of the project.
Planning activities are underway.
The project involves the construction of 533MW gas-fired power plant at Qua Iboe Terminal, Ibeno located on the coast 20km south of Eket, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
The US$1,136 million project includes the following:
1. Construction of a powerhouse
2. Laying of a 56km transmission line
3. Installation of turbines
4. Installation of pipelines
5. Installation of generators
6. Construction of other related facilities
