The National Investment Commission (NIC) is undertaking the construction of an airport and aerotropolis in Diwaniya, Al-Qadisiyyah, Iraq.
The project involves the construction of an airport and aerotropolis, and will be executed in three phases.
The first phase includes the construction of an airport on 1,750ha of land at the value of US$252 million. It includes the construction of a 3,600m runway, air control buildings, an administrative space, and parking and related facilities, as well as the installation of signaling and safety systems.
The second phase includes the construction of a free trade zone at the value of US$589 million. The third phase includes the construction of an aerotropolis on 1,750ha of land at the value of US$589 million.
It also includes the construction of hotels, an entertainment district, an exposition center, public plaza, a shopping center, a hospital, a medical center, a sports complex, industrial parks, university campus, a research & Technology Park, manufacturing facilities, mixed-use commercial and residential facilities.
In April 2014, Al Nasriyah Al Kuwaitiah Company entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Diwaniya Governorate to develop.
In August 2014, NIC obtained necessary approvals for the development.
In January 2015, Al Nasriyah Al Kuwaitiah Company signed a US$1,350 million contract for 45-year lease and operate agreement with the NIC and the Diwaniya governorate to design, build and operate.
In December 2015, the groundbreaking ceremony was postponed until the construction equipment and machinery were transferred to the construction site.
In early 2016, the project was placed on hold, due to the delay of the legal and administrative procedures, as well as the security situations in Iraq. However, in November 2016, NIC resumed the plans.
Study activities are underway.
