The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) a subsidiary of The Ministry of Railways (MoR) is undertaking the Railway Development project between India and Bangladesh.
The project involves the construction of 15km railway line from Agartala to Akhaurah.
The project also includes the construction of railway stations, rail tracks, platforms, pedestrian ways, signaling units, interchange sections, retaining walls, 3.7 km long flyover, administrative buildings and other rail infrastructure.
Out of 15km rail line, 5km of tracks falls in the Indian Territory and the remaining 10km tracks falls in Bangladesh.
On February 16, 2013, the Governments of India and Bangladesh have signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Dhaka for the construction of a rail link between Akhaura and Agartala.
The final survey on the project has been completed. Initially the Government of India was allocated US$40 million for the project.
IRCON International Ltd has been appointed as study consultant and contractor for track laying works.
The project needs 40ha of land for the construction.
In July 2015, Indian Government agreed to fund US$156 million for laying tracks and acquiring land in both Indian and Bangladeshi territory.
In March 2016, the PMO has made an assessment of the project and directed the Union ministry of development of northeast region(DoNER) to release funds for the project.
In July 2016, government official waiting for the funds to start acquisition of land for the project. US$14 million was earmarked for land for project on the Indian side.
In October 2016, meeting was held between Bangladesh and Indian delegates regarding project.
Land acquisition activities are underway. Construction work on the project is expected to be completed by March 2019.
