NB Power is planning to undertake the redevelopment of the existing hydropower plant in New Brunswick, Canada.
The project involves the redevelopment of the existing 672MW Mactaquac hydropower plant. It will include the construction of a powerhouse, a substation, a spillway, access roads and related infrastructure, the installation of transformers and generators, and the laying of transmission lines.
Canadian Rivers Institute (CRI) is undertaking the feasibility study to evaluate key environmental challenges. The utility hired the CRI as part of a US$2.3 million environmental study to help decide if the Mactaquac Generating Station should be removed or rebuilt.
The CRI is looking for the movements of fish tagged with acoustic beacons. Other teams will investigate sediment deposits and various environmental factors.
NB Power has four options: Repower, Retain the Headpond, Remove the Dam and Restore the River and Lifetime Achievement.
The study works were commenced in 2013 and completed in 2017.
