National Authority for Tunnels (NAT), a subsidiary of Ministry of Transportation, Egypt (MoT), is planning to undertake the construction of a sixth metro line in Cairo, Egypt.
The project involves the construction of a 30km metro line from Al-Khosos north of Cairo to the southern suburb of Maadi.
It involves the construction of 24 railway stations including 12 elevated and 12 underground stations, platforms, security rooms and parking facilities, the installation of lights, safety, security and signalling systems and the laying of railway tracks.
On December 31, 2015, the MoT signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) to construct the project.
On July 11, 2017, NAT signed a preliminary agreement with Bombardier to construct, seek finance from the Canadian government, and develop the concept plan.
The concept plan will include technical and financial studies, as well as look at potential partnerships for other aspects of the project that Bombardier would not be involved in, such as laying down tracks or building tunnels.
The Military Production Ministry signed an Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bombardier on manufacturing locomotives and other equipment required for the project.
Study works are underway. Construction is expected to complete by 2022.
