Ministry of Transport, Post and Telecommunications, Republic of Burundi (MoTPT) and Ministry of Transport, Tanzania (MoT) are jointly planning to develop a cargo railway line from Tanzania to Burundi.
The project involves the construction of a 203km cargo railway line.
It includes the construction of storage facilities, loading and unloading facilities and related infrastructure, the installation of signal systems, information boards and level crossings, and the laying of railway tracks.
In March 2014, MoTPT and MoT signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop the project.
The project will be jointly funded by the MoT and MoTPT.
In March 2017, Tanzanian government committed to provide funds for the project in 2017-2018 budget.
Planning activities are underway.
The project involves the construction of a 203km cargo railway line from Uvinza, kelelema to Msongati, Burundi.
The US$700 million includes the following:
1. Construction of storage facilities
2. Construction of loading and unloading facilities
3. Installation of signal systems
4. Installation of information boards
5. Installation of level crossings
6. Laying of railway tracks
7. Construction of other related facilities
