Ministry of Transportation (MoT) is planning to develop the second phase of rapid transport network in Bahrain.
The project involves the construction of rapid transport network. It includes a 72km transport system comprising light rail transport (LRT), tramway and a bus rapid transport.
The project includes the construction of stations and other related infrastructure and the installation of signals, electric lines, ticketing systems and security systems.
In April 2010, ten consulting firms have been pre-qualified to complete a detailed feasibility study on the project. The firms were Atkins, Parsons Global Services, Mott Macdonald, Systra, Aecom, RMJM, Steer Davies Gleave, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Dar al-Handasah, DB International, Arup Gulf, Scott Wilson and Cowi Almoayyed Gulf.
SYSTRA S.A has been appointed as master planner for the entire project.
Scomi Engineering was appointed as the study consultant for the project. However, later the contract with Scomi Engineering was terminated.
In February 2016, MoT has invite bids for the appointing study consultants for conducting feasible study activities on project.
In May 2016, nine companies: Italferr Spa, Egis International, WSP Middle East, Systra, Aecom Middle East, Sener-Setec, Hyder Consulting ME, Idom Ingenieria Y Consultoria Sau and Parsons Global Services have submitted technical bids for light rail study consultancy.
On September 4, 2016, Spain-based Idom Ingenieria y Consultoria offered the lowest bid of US$2.43 million for the light rail study consultancy contract.
In December 2016, IDOM Consulting Engineering Architecture SAU was appointed to provide consultancy services for the light rail network project.
In January 2017, IDOM Consulting Engineering Architecture SAU has commenced study activities on the project.
Study activities are underway and expected to be completed by the end of February 2018.
The project involves the construction of 72km monorail network in Bahrain.
The US$3,090 million project includes the following:
1. Construction of stations

3. Construction of other related facilities
