The Ministry of Transportation, Ontario (MoT) is planning to build a Bus Rapid transit system in London, Ontario, Canada.
The project involves the construction of a 24km bus rapid transit system from White Oaks Mall in the south to Masonville Place in the north and from Fanshawe College in the east to Oxford and Wonderland in the west.
The project is also expected to feature “modern stations” and a rapid transit tunnel under the CP rail tracks at Oxford Street and Richmond Street.
It also includes the construction of access roads, related infrastructure and the installation of signaling and safety systems.
London City Council has committed US$99 million for the project covered by development charges.
In January 2015, MoT commenced the environmental assessment to identify the most appropriate route and the best technology options for the project.
In May 2015, the city hall proposed two plans to include a light rail and rapid bus routes or a combination of both.
On November 9, 2015, MoT finalizes the best option for the development of the project which is to implement 13.2km of light rail, running north and east from downtown and 10.6km of rapid bus service, running south and west from downtown.
In May 2016, London City Council approves the plan to move ahead with a rapid transit system that includes rapid buses, but no light rail.
On June 1, 2016, London City Council approved US$383 million for the project.
In May 2017, London City Council gave final approval for the project.
MoT is in the process of submitting plans to the provincial and federal governments. Construction works are expected to commence in 2018 with completion expected by 2027.
