The Ministry of Railways, China (MoRC) and Ministry of Railways, Pakistan (MoRP) are jointly planning to undertake the Kashgar-Gwadar Railway Line project from Kashgar in Xinjiang, China to Gwadar, Pakistan.

The project involves the construction of 1,800km railway line, 200km tunnels, 60km bridges, stations, terminals and other related facilities, the installation of signaling and safety systems, and the laying of rail tracks.

The project will pass through Gwadar-Karachi-Islamabad-Kashgar.

In December 2013, MoR secured planning approval from the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) for the project.

In June 2014, Planning Commission approved US$1.33 million funding in the fiscal year 2014-15 for conducting feasibility studies. MoR will provide the funding up to US$0.98 million.

In May 2016, China and Pakistan signed an official agreement to undertake the project.

Scope

The Kashgar-Gwadar Railway Line project involves the construction of 1,800km railway line from Kashgar in Xinjiang, China to Gwadar, Pakistan.

The US$40,000 million project includes the following:

1. Laying of 1,800km railway tracks

2. Construction of stations and platforms

3. Construction of 200km tunnels

4. Construction of other related infrastructure facilities
