The Ministry of Railways (MoR) in collaboration with the Government of Karnataka (GoK) is planning to build a rail coach manufacturing unit in Kolar, Karnataka, India.
The project involves the construction of a rail coach factory on 452ha of land. It includes the construction of a coach manufacturing unit, an embedded track, a finishing shop and a welding unit; the installation of electric supply systems, water supply systems, heavy cranes, safety and security systems.
The project will be developed under cost-sharing method, wherein MoR and GoK will have to share the investment costs.
In August 2013, the Indian government released the US$3.95 million for land acquisition.
In February 2014, the project received in-principle approval from the cabinet and laid the foundation stone in March 2014.
In 2015, the project was delayed as the central government failed to grant funds.
Land acquisition activities on the project are underway.
