The Ministry of Public Works, Eritrea (MoPW) is undertaking the first phase development of Massawa New Port in Eritrea.
The project involves the construction of a 70,000 tonne bulk cargo terminal and a 50,000 tonne multi-purpose terminal. The project will include the construction of corresponding port area, incoming road, goods yard, office facilities, inspection area, power supply, water supply and drainage facilities, communication, installation of safety systems and the construction of other related facilities.
On January 28, 2014, China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC) signed the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with MoPW for the project. The contract is worth US$400 million.
Construction commenced in the fourth quarter of 2015.
