The Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mines of the Republic of Malawi (MoNREM) is planning to undertake the construction of a hydroelectric power plant Chikhwawa, Malawi.
The project involves the construction of a 200MW hydroelectric power plant.
It includes the construction of a dam, a powerhouse, a substation and service roads, the installation of four turbines, transformers and generators, and the laying of transmission lines.
In March 2013, the African Development Bank (AfDB) approved US$3.04 million and the government of Malawi set to contribute US$0.23 million to study the project.
In June 2013, MoE presented the development proposals at Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) international center.
The final project value will be confirmed by the feasibility study and layout designs of the project.
On April 6, 2015, contract was signed with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mines of the Republic of Malawi and COBA Portugal to perform the study of the feasibility for the hydroelectric power plant Kholombidzo.
In February 2016, AfDB announced the finalization of feasibility studies.
Feasibility study on full designs and tender documents are at advanced stage.
Construction works are expected to completed by 2022.
The project involves the construction of a hydroelectric power plant to generate 200MW of electricity at Kholombidzo upstream of Shire River about 54km from Blantyre in Chikhwawa, Malawi.
The US$435 million project includes the following:
