The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MoEMD) plans to undertake the construction of Hydroelectric Power Plant project in Uganda.
The project involves the construction of a hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 840MW. It will be developed in two phases as Ayago North and Ayago South.
It will include the construction of a powerhouse and a substation, the installation turbines, generators, and transformers, and the laying of transmission lines.
MoEMD appointed Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) as implementing agency.
In 2008, the Government of Japan, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in collaboration with the Government of Uganda, began preparations for environmental impact assessments, International bidding for a contractor.
JICA has also provided the commitment as a lead funding source for the project.
Associated Engineering Surveyors Ltd of Kampala and Electric Power Development Company have been appointed as surveyors, Wapcos Limited and Aqua Green Engineering Management PVT LTD as consulting engineers and PAC as technical feasibility study consultant.
In April 2013, Mapa Construction Company has been appointed as EPC contractor, however, in August 2013, the contract has been reallocated to China Gezhouba Group.
In February 2016, feasibility studies were completed.
In June 2017, the project was temporarily kept on hold due to financial issues. However, the stalled plans were revived.
Planning activities are underway.
The project involves the construction of a hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 840MW at Ayago on the Victoria Nile, Nwoya District, Uganda.
The US$1,970 million project includes the following:
1. Construction of a powerhouse
2. Construction of a substation
3. Installation of turbines
4. Installation of generators
5. Installation of transformers
6. Laying of transmission lines
