Tanzanian Ministry of Energy and Minerals (MoEM) is planning to construct the Ruhudji Hydroelectric project in southern Tanzania.
The project involves the construction of a 358MW hydroelectric power plant. The Ruhudji HPP includes two main components.
Component I will include the design, construction and operation of the hydropower plant by a private investor company. The scheme will include a reservoir and power plant (downstream from the dam). The project will have a 16.3km2 reservoir surface area, an underground power station, an estimated 7.3km headrace tunnel, an estimated 1.1km long steel-lined pressure shaft and an estimated 3.1km tailrace tunnel. This component will be financed and implemented by the private sector.
Component II will include the design, construction and operation of a transmission line to evacuate the power generated from the power station to the nearest tapping point of the main grid system. There are several line routing alternatives, which still need further economic, technical and environmental study. This component is likely to be financed and implemented by TANESCO.
The Government of Tanzania intends to develop the project on public-private partnership (PPP) basis.
Chris Head and Associates and Ridgway Capital Projects have been appointed as financial advisors, ADEPT Chambers and Africa Legal Network (ALN) as legal advisors for the project.
Aldwych International has been appointed as a Developer for Component I.
SMEC and South-South Global Assets and Technology Exchange (SS-GATE) have been awarded a contract for technical advisory support for the project. SMEC will assist and advise MoEM and other stakeholders on the technical aspects of the project during two phases: technical appraisal until financial close and contract award; and construction supervision, certification and commissioning.
The project is awaiting for approvals and finance.
The project involves the construction of a 358MW hydroelectric power plant on the Ruhudji River, located at some 75km South-East of Njombe Town and approximately 760km southwest of Dar es Salaam in southern Tanzania.
The US$1,000 million project includes the following:
1. Construction of a reservoir
2. Construction of an underground power station
3. Construction of a 7.3km headrace tunnel
4. Construction of a 1.1km steel-lined pressure shaft
5. Construction of a 3.1km tailrace tunnel
6. Installation of generators and turbines
7. Laying of transmission lines
