The Ministry of Energy (MoE), Ministry of Energy & Mineral Development (MEMD) and Ministry of Infrastructure (MoI) are planning to undertake the construction of Olkaria-Birembo-Uganda Transmission Line project in Kenya.

The project involves the construction of a 1,300km, 400kV transmission line. It includes the construction of 13 substations and related infrastructure, the installation of transformers, the laying of transmission lines.

In September 2014, MoE, MEMD and MoI through the Joint Steering Committee (JSC), have launched a request for expressions of interest (RFEoI) to develop a feasibility study for the project.

On April 15, 2015, The AF Group was appointed as study consultant.

Study activities are underway.

Scope

The project involves the construction of a 1,300km, 400kV transmission line between Olkaria in Kenya and Birembo in Rwanda through Uganda.

The US$800 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of 13 substations

2. Installation of transformers

3. Laying of transmission lines
