The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is planning to undertake the construction of a rail line in Minnesota, the US.
The project involves the construction of a 245km railway line, which will pass between the Minneapolis Transportation Interchange station and the City of Duluth, along Highway 65 and Interstate 35.
The project will include the construction of railway stations, ticket counter, parking space and related infrastructure, the installation of signaling systems, and the laying of railway tracks.
QUANDEL CONSULTANTS, LLC and Zan Associates has been appointed as project manager.
In 2010, the project was approved by the MnDOT to receive US$3 million of the state's US$26 million in bonding authority.
In May 2011, the project received US$5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for engineering and environmental work.
In the fourth quarter of 2013, financial planning and ridership studies commenced. Three alternative routes are being considered with stops in Hinckley, Coon Rapids, Cambridge and possibly Superior.
On December 16, 2015, MnDOT announced the value of the project was cut down to US$600 million.
Environmental review process is underway and is expected to be completed by June 2017. Subject to securing funds and approvals, the project is scheduled to be completed on January 1, 2020.
