Ministry of Infrastructure of Rwanda (MinInfra), jointly with Ministry of Water, Energy & Minerals Burundi (MoEB) and Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, Democratic Republic of Congo (MoEC), is planning to undertake the Rusizi IV Hydro Power Plant project in Western Province, Rwanda.
The project will be implemented by Energy Water & Sanitation Authority Limited (EWSA), Rwanda on the behalf of MinInfra, MoEB and MoEC.
It involves the construction of a 287MW hydropower plant. It includes the construction of an 80m feed channel, 4.5km long low-pressure tunnel, surge shaft and a surface power station with 4x72MW Francis units. The project is planned to be developed on PPP (Public Private Partnership) basis.
The project includes the construction of a powerhouse, substations and related facilities, the installation of turbines and generators, and the laying of power transmission lines.
Fitchner GmbH has been appointed as a feasibility study consultant for the project.
European Union (EU) and African Development Bank (AfDB) provides US$450 million funds for the project.
The project involves the construction of a 287MW hydro power plant on Rusizi River in Rusizi District, Western Province, Rwanda.
The US$500 million project includes the following:
1. Construction of a 80m feed channel
2. Construction of a 4.5km long low pressure tunnel
3. Construction of a surge shaft
4. Construction of a surface power station with 4x72MW Francis units
5. Construction of a power house
6. Construction of substations
7. Installation of turbines
8. Installation of generators
9. Laying of power transmission lines
