Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) is undertaking the construction of a LNG terminal in Karanja, Maharashtra, India.
The project involves the construction of a LNG terminal comprising a floating storage and re-gasification unit with a capacity to handle 5 million tonnes of LNG per annum.
It includes the construction of processing units, storage units, control rooms and related infrastructure, the installation of equipment, and the laying of pipelines.
In May 2015, India Gas Solutions a joint venture of Reliance Industries and BP, Mitsui, Excelerate Energy and a consortium of India’s IMC and Norway’s Hoegh LNG are bidding for the project. The selected bidder will set up the floating storage and regasification unit (FRSU) on PPP (public-private partnership) basis, and run it on the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) model.
In November 2015, MbPT allocated US$106 million for the project.
MbPT is awaiting project approvals from the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs.
