ArcelorMittal Ltd (MT) is planning to undertake the development of steel plant project in Jharkhand, India.
The project involves the construction of a steel plant with the capacity of 12MTPA and planned to be implemented in two phases with 6MTPA capacity each.
The project includes the construction of a raw material handling complex, a new sintering plant, a hot rolling steel mill complex, and the installation of blast furnace, basic oxygen furnace, coarse mixing system and pig casting machines.
In October 2005, MT signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Jharkhand government to undertake development works.
In August 2012, MT requested to renew the MoU for setting up the steel plant.
In January 2017, the ministry of environment rejected the project proposal stating out that the area under consideration is areserved forest area.
