Residence Education and Housing Services (REHS), a department of the Division of Residential and Hospitality Services at Michigan State University (MSU), is undertaking the construction of a residential complex in East Lansing, the US.
The project involves the construction of a residential complex comprising 10 buildings on 4ha of land. It includes the construction of 37,161m2 of new housing, a 9,290m2 of an office building for the university’s Residential and Hospitality Services (RHS) Division, 1,800 event and resident parking spaces, a community garden, retail space, and indoor and outdoor common space.
The project will provide 60 one-bedroom units, 29 two-bedroom units for students with families, as well as 244 units for individual students, consisting of a combination of studios and two- and four-bedroom apartments.
The project will be developed in two phases:
Phase I included the family housing and parking structure.
Phase II includes single student housing and the mixed-use office building.
In October 2013, the MSU Board of Trustees granted REHS authorization to begin the project design plans.
In March 2014, SHW Group and Encore Architects were appointed to conduct the feasibility study and site evaluation for the project.
Walbridge has been appointed as the construction contractor for the project and Orion Construction has been appointed as the sub contractor for the wood-frame portion of the project.
REHS will revise the project plans before presenting project details to the MSU Board of Trustees in June 2015.
On June 17, 2015, MSU Board approved the project.
On September 11, 2015, construction works commenced.
In August 2016, construction works on the first phase completed.
Construction works on the second phase are underway with single student housing is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2017 and the mixed-use office building by October 2017.
