The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is planning to undertake the expansion of the Mumbai-Pune expressway in Maharashtra, India.
The project involves the expansion of the Kalamboli-Sinhgad Institute expressway from the existing six lanes to 14 lanes.
The project will include the construction of a 9.9km tunnel between Khopoli and Lonavala to keep the two roads separate between Kalamboli and Khopoli up to Lonavala. The tunnel will pass through the Bhushi Dam, to minimize the travel time.
The project will also include the construction of six-lane roads from Shilphata to Kalamboli, and Dehu Road to Nigadi, a new 12-km long bypass with two tunnels and two viaducts.
An expert committee was constituted to conduct a feasibility study for the project. The committee submitted its report to MSRDC.
In September 2013, project received approval from the state government of Maharashtra and will now be discussed and finalized in the infrastructure committee.
In July 2014, Jai hind Road Builders was appointed as the construction contractor.
In September 2016, the Maharashtra government approved the project and sanctioned a fund of US$479 million.
MSRDC is still waiting for environment clearances and government’s approval for 12-km long bypass.
