Summary

Main Roads Western Australia (MRWA) is planning to undertake the Bunbury Outer Ring Road project in Western Australia.

The project involves the construction of new outer ring road as a four-lane dual carriageway. The project is being implemented in three stages namely Central Stage, Southern Stage and Northern Stage.

The Central Stage of the Bunbury Outer Ring Road involved the second stage of the Bunbury Port Access Road. It comprises 4km road from the Boyanup Picton Road to South Western Highway in Davenport. It includes the construction of two dual-lane bridges over the Preston River, new intersections at the junctions of South Western Highway, Boyanup Picton Road, Moore Road and Port Access Road.

The Southern Stage of the Bunbury Outer Ring Road involves the construction of 9.6km of four-lane dual carriageway from South Western Highway to Bussell Highway in Gelorup. It includes the construction of an overpass at Yalinda Drive in Gelorup, new intersections at Lillydale Road, Hastie Road and Ducane Roads and a proposed service road between Ducane Road and Jilley Road to provide access to adjacent properties.

The Northern Stage involves the construction of 7km of the road from Perth-Bunbury Highway to Picton Boyanup Road near the central stage. It includes the construction of grade-separated interchanges at the intersections, a bridge over the Boyanup Picton Road, Manjimup Railway line, and Ferguson River.

In February 2012, Fulton Hogan was appointed as design-build contractor for the central stage.

The Federal Government has funded US$136 million in partnership with the Western Australian Government for the central stage.

Harley Dykstra appointed to undertake the surveying and generate operational data for the development of this major arterial road of the central stage.

Construction works commenced on the central stage in April 2012 and completed in June 2013.

The preliminary design work has completed on the Southern Stage and MRWA is seeking approval from environmental protection authority (EPA) and the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (DoSEWPaC). Northern Stage of the project is in early development stage.

Planning activities are underway and the project is facing delay due to funding issues.
