The Ministry of Rail Transportation (MRT) is planning to undertake the modernization of Yangon to Mandalay railway line in Myanmar.
The project involves the modernization of 620km rail link from Rangoon in Yangon to the northern city of Mandalay and will be implemented in two phases:
The first phase includes Yangon-Taungoo railroad and the second phase includes Taungoo- Mandalay railroad.
It includes the construction of railway stations, bridges, control center, the installation of signaling systems, lighting systems, safety and security systems, the laying of railway lines.

In June 2013, the feasibility works completed on the project.
The rehabilitation contract for a 620km link will be given to Japanese companies because the study was funded by a grant from Japan.
On September 5, 2014, JICA signed ODA loan agreements with the government of Myanmar to provide US$201.6 million funding for the project.
In October 2014, letters of invitation for consulting services for the first phase was issued.
On May 15, 2015, Mitsubishi Corporation and Hitachi were appointed as the supply contractor for the project. The scope of the contract is to supply and installation of railway signal systems.
On August 1, 2015, Marubeni Corporation and Mitsui were appointed as the supply contractor. the scope of the contract is to supply and install an operational control center and railway safety equipment.
In November 2015, MRT has submitted has applied for approval of the using Japan ODA Loan and also for National Budget for the project.
In December 2016, the tender was issued for rail cars on the project with submission de4adline March 2017, later it was extended to April 25, 2017.
Studies are underway to determine the precise scale of improvements at each of the railway’s junctures, the project is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2018 and completed by 2023.
