Metro Jeddah Company (MJC), a subsidiary of Jeddah Development and Urban Regeneration Co., is planning to build a tramway in Jeddah, Hijaz Tihamah region, Saudi Arabia.
The project involves the construction of a 16km double-track Corniche Tramway from the Globe Roundabout in the north to a terminus near Tahlia Street, with 15 stations and a fleet of around 11 trams.
It includes the construction of depots, administrative centers, control rooms, maintenance yards, train sheds and related facilities, the installation of signal systems and safety and security systems and the laying of railway tracks.
In May 2014, MJC unveiled the preliminary project plans. Aecom Technology Corporation (ACM) was awarded a US$28 million contract to provide pre-program management consultancy services. Under the 18-month contract, ACM will provide preliminary planning and design work on the proposed plans.
On July 17, 2014, MJC entered into a contract with SYSTRA SA for the provision of preliminary engineering designs for the project.
On March 30, 2015, Foster + Partners Ltd (FPL) was appointed as a planner to design a long-term blueprint for the project.
In May 2015, Arcadis NV was appointed as part of the FPL team to develop the architectural vision.
Further timeline for the project is yet to be revealed.
As of September 2017, study activities are underway.
