Metro Jeddah Company (MJC), a subsidiary of Jeddah Development and Urban Regeneration Co., is planning to build a commuter rail system in Jeddah, Hijaz Tihamah region, Saudi Arabia.
The project involves the construction of a 159km rail network. It includes the construction of 24 stations, depots, administrative centres, control rooms, maintenance yards, train sheds and related facilities, the installation of signal systems and safety and security systems and the laying of railway tracks.
In May 2014, MJC unveiled the preliminary project plans. Aecom Technology Corporation (ACM) was awarded a US$28 million contract to provide pre-program management consultancy services. Under the 18-month contract, ACM will provide preliminary planning and design work on the proposed plans.
On July 17, 2014, MJC entered into a contract with SYSTRA SA for the provision of preliminary engineering designs for the project.
In April 2015, Foster + Partners was appointed as architect to develop a commuter rail design, as part of Jeddah transit system. Aecom has been appointed as the consultant.
In May 2015, Arcadis NV was appointed as part of the FPL team to develop the architectural vision.
Further timeline for the project is yet to be revealed.
