Melford International Terminal Inc (MIT), Cyrus Capital Partners(CCP) and SSA Marine,Inc. forming a joint venture are planning to undertake the construction of a terminal in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, Canada.
The project involves the construction of a container terminal and a logistics park covering more than 505ha of land which will take an advantage of a deep, ice-free harbor.
The project is planned to be executed in phases. The project includes the development of terminal on a 135ha of land and a logistics park on a 607ha of land.
The first phase will include the construction of a terminal comprising two berths with initial projected capacity of 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per year.
The project also includes the construction of container three deep water berths, ducts, storage facilities, office facilities, parking and other related facilities, and the installation of container lifting equipment.
The project has secured environmental approvals from the Governments of Canada and Nova Scotia in fourth quarter of 2008.
On July 7, 2013, Melford International Terminal (MIT) has signed an agreement with Maher Terminals, the operator of one of the largest marine container terminals in North America to which Maher will become a shareholder and provide services for a new container terminal.
Cyrus Capital Partners and Maher Terminals have been appointed as developers.
In September 2013, MIT acquired the land for the terminal and rail line.
In September 2014, MIT officials announced the construction start date was pushed further.
In April 2016, the project was put on hold due to financial issues.
In July 2016, MIT is in the process of terminating the agreement with Maher and SSA Marine is planning to form a joint venture with Melford International Terminal (MIT) and Cyrus Capital Partners LP (CCP) to invest in the project.
In January 2017, MIT formed a joint venture with SSA Marine and CCP.
