Ministerio de Energía y Minas (MEM) or Ministry of Energy and Mines, Peru is planning to develop the Marañon hydropower plant project on the river of Marañon, Peru.

The project involves the construction of a 1,525MW hydroelectric plant, a reservoir of 145m high and 380m long, two tunnels of 510m and 630m respectively, powerhouses, substations, switchyards and other related infrastructure, the installation of generators, turbines and other related equipment, and the laying of transmission lines.

Prefeasibility studies for the project were carried out by El Instituto de Investigaciones Energéticas y Servicio de Ingeniería Eléctrica (INIE) of Electroperú.

Generalima, a subsidiary of ENDESA that is another subsidiary of ENEL, was awarded the study contract for the project.

In September 2013, study works have been started in the regions of Ancash, Huánuco and La Libertad.

Study works are underway.
