Ministère de l'Equipement, de l'Habitat et de l'Aménagement du Territoire (MEHAT) is undertaking the rehabilitation of the road transport corridor I in Tunisia.
The project involves the widening and upgrade of a 146km of the national highways in three sections: a 49km section of the national highway-12 between Sousse and Kairouan, a 65km section of the national highway-4 between Siliana and El Fahs and a 22km section of the national highway-133 between Zaghouan and Jebel El Oust.
It includes the construction of interchanges, underpasses, overpasses, security barriers and the installation of lighting, signaling and security systems.
In September 2013, MEHAT commenced the public consultation process for Sousse and Kairouan section.
In December 2013, MEHAT commenced the public consultation process for the Siliana and El Fahs sections.
In February 2014, MEHAT commenced the public consultation process for the Zaghouan and Jebel El Oust sections.
In March 2015, the environmental studies for the Zaghouan and Jebel El Oust section were completed.
On July 14, 2015, the World Bank approved the US$200 million fund for the project.
In February 2017, environmental impact assessment between El Fahs and Siliana has been completed.
Planning activities are underway.
The project involves the rehabilitation of a 146km section of the national highway in Tunisia.

2. Upgrade of 2x2 highway between Sousse and Kairouan
3. Upgrade of 2x3 highway between Siliana and El Fahs

6. Construction of underpasses and overpasses
7. Construction of security barriers
8. Installation of lighting systems
9. Installation of signaling systems
10. Installation of security systems
