Mahanadi Basin Power Ltd (MBPL) is planning to undertake the construction of Mahanadi Coal Fired Power Plant project in Odisha, India.
The project involves the construction of a 1,600MW (2x800MW) super-critical coal-fired power plant.
It includes the construction of powerhouse, substation, water treatment plant, the laying of transmission lines, and the installation of transformers, generators, boilers, turbines.
The project will be developed in joint-venture (JV) with a private partner. MCL holds 49% stake in the SPV whereas the private partner will hold the rest of the stake. MCL will help the JV partner with land, coal linkages and some pre-project formalities.
MCL is in search for the private partner to develop the project. The JV partner will be selected through tariff based competitive bidding. It received 41 responses after issuance of expression of interests (EoI) in August 2011. Companies such as Tata Power, Adani, Nalco, GMR, Essar Power participated in the EoI meeting.
PFC Consulting has been appointed as the planning consultant.
In April 2014, MCL invited bids for consultancy services for preparing a detailed project report (DPR).
On November 6, 2014, the project secured in-principle approval and CIL approved the capital investment.
In September 2015, the project secured approval from the High Level Clearance Authority.
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study on the project has been completed.
