Makerere University (MAK) is planning to construct the teaching hospital in Kampala, Uganda.

The project involves the construction of an 800 to 1,000-bed hospital on a 283ha of land.

The project will include the construction of an emergency care center, an acute and critical care center, a diagnostic and treatment center, an in-patient ward, an out-patient ward, operating theaters, medical laboratories, canteen facilities, parking facilities, administrative offices and doctors consulting rooms and the installation of safety equipment.

In October 2011, a bilateral agreement was signed between the Government of the Uganda and the Government of the China. According to the agreement, the MAK will receive a funding of U$100 million from the Chinese Government to fund projects in education and also to construct a University teaching hospital.

On January 6, 2014, MAK finalized plans to develop the project on public private partnership (PPP) basis. and issued an expression of interest (EoI) with February 14, 2014 as submission deadline.

Technology Consults Ltd (TECO) has been appointed as consulting engineer for the project.

MAK is in process of selecting partners for the project development.


The project involves the construction of 800 to 1,000-bed hospital for Makerere University College of Health Sciences on 283ha of land on Gayaza Road in Katalemwa, Kampala, Uganda.

The US$80 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of an operation theater

2. Construction of an emergency care center

3. Construction of an inpatient wards

4. Construction of an out-patient ward

5. Construction of a diagnostic and treatment center

6. Construction of administrative offices

7. Construction of medical laboratories

8. Construction of canteen facilities

9. Construction of parking facilities

10. Installation of safety equipment
