Lekela Power (Lekela), a joint venture of Actis and Mainstream Renewable Power is undertaking the Wind Farm project in the Gulf of Suez, Egypt.
The project involves the construction of a 250MW wind farm. It includes the construction of powerhouse and substations, the installation of wind turbines, electric feeder system, converters, transformers, power controlling systems and the laying of transmission lines.
GL Garrad Hassan, Fichtner and Company were appointed as study consultant to provide technical assistance, and also to perform the feasibility and wind measurement studies.
In November 2012, 10 bidders were shortlisted by Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) for the development of the project.
In May 2013, a request for proposal (RFP) to build, own and operate (BOO) the project was issued by EETC.
On November 5, 2015, Lekela signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with EETC to develop the project under BOO contract.
In November 2016, the project secured US$283 million funding from European Development Partners (EDP) comprising the European Union (EU), KfW for German Development Cooperation, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Agence Française de Développement (AFD). Under the agreement EU will provide US$32 million, KfW will US$76 million, EIB will US$122 million and AFD will US$53 million while the remaining UIS$82 million will be provided by the government of Egypt.
Lekela is undertaking the development works.
