The Lunzua Power Authority (LPA) and Global Lake, an entity under CDC Group (CDC) are planning to undertake the construction of hydro power plant project in the Northern Province of Zambia.

The project involves the construction of a hydro power plant with an installed capacity of 151MW.

The project will include the construction of a dam, a power house, an intake tunnel, penstock, a substation, the installation of turbines, generators, transformers and the laying of transmission lines.

The Ministry of Energy and Water Development (MEWD) awarded build-own-operate (BOO) contract to LPA.

Nova Capital & PWC has been appointed as a financial advisor, Corpus & DentonWildeSapte as legal advisor and Zulu Burrows as an environmental consultant.

China National Electric and Engineering Company (CNEEC) has been appointed as the construction contractor and Knight Piesold as a lead consultant for the project.

The project is being funded by Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA).

In August 2011, MEWD signed an agreement with LPA to carry out the development of hydro-power projects in the country.

In March 2017, LPA has engaged Global Lake of the Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC) as an equity partner.

In April 2017, LPA and Zesco Ltd has signed the Independent Power Purchasing (IPP) agreement.

The project is awaiting environmental approval (EA) from the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA).

Construction works are scheduled to commence in July 2018 with scheduled completion by October 2022.


The project involves the construction of a 151MW hydroelectric power plant at Kundabwika Falls on the Kalungwishi River in the Northern Province of Zambia.

The US$430 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of a power house to install turbines and generators

2. Construction of intake and outfall tunnels

3. Construction of spillways and penstocks

4. Construction of reservoir or dam structures

5. Construction of access roads
