The Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) is planning to undertake the construction of a dam in Magwagwa, Nyanza Province, Kenya.

The project involves the construction of a 95m-high and 450m-long concrete-faced rockfill dam with a capacity to generate 120 MW of hydropower.

The project includes the construction of a barrage, a reservoir of 17.7km2 with an active storage of 445 million m3, a substation, a powerhouse with three 40MW generation units, access roads, pump stations, an 11km head race tunnel, upstream surge shaft, downstream surge chamber and a 6 km long tailrace tunnel, and the installation of spillway, safety and security systems, and the laying of transmission lines.

The net command area for irrigation is 13,807ha. Phase 1 of the irrigation scheme development comprises the construction of 16 km long concrete lined main canal from Sondu-Miriu Powerhouse to the right bank of the Asawo river, secondary and tertiary canals, regulation structures and appurtenant works to cover 3,063ha.

In 2011, SMEC International Pty Ltd conducted the feasibility study on detail design and social and environmental impact assessments (DSEIA) on the project.

Rock Link Gealogical consultants has been appointed to undertake Geo-technical investigation.

On August 26, 2016, LBDA issued an expression of interest (EOI) for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and financing of the project with a submission deadline of October 6, 2016.

Pre-tender activities are underway and LBDA is in the process of awarding contract for Transaction Advisory (TA) Services.

Scope

The Magwagwa Multipurpose Dam project involves the construction of a 95m high and 450m long concrete faced rockfill dam will generate 120 MW of hydropower in Magwagwa, Nyanza Province, Kenya.
