Kedah State Government (KSG) is planning to undertake the construction of an international airport in Kulim, Kedah, Malaysia.
The project involves the construction of an airport on 6,00ha of land. It includes the construction of two runways, passenger terminals, access roads, control towers, an administrative facility, parking facilities and related infrastructure, and the installation of signaling and safety systems.
In January 2015, KSG has applied for federal approval to build the airport and is looking at various financing methods for the construction of the airport. The project is implemented through public-private partnership (PPP).
Local private investors and international investors from china namely China State Construction Engineering Corp are expressing keen interest in developing the project although an official announcement is not yet confirmed.
Economic Planning Unit (EPU), Malaysia has been appointed as a study consultant.
KPMG and the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) have been appointed to prepare the study report. KPMG prepared the proposal for the EPU, while NCIA drafted the proposal for the state government.
KSG is in the process to submit a final report to the Federal Government. The report will include funding options for the project and various options to fund the airport from the State and Federal Governments.
