Kerala Rapid Transit Corporation Ltd. (KRTL), a special purpose vehicle (SPV) formed by the Government of Kerala (GoK), is planning to construct the light metro project in Kozhikode, Kerala, India.
The project includes the construction of a 14.2km light metro line from Meenchantha to Medical College with 15 stations. It will start from Karipur Airport, linking Ramanattukara, Meenchanda, Mini- Bypass, Arayadathupalam and culminate at the Medical College.
It project includes the construction of railway stations, access roads, administrative spaces, parking facilities and related infrastructure and the installation of signals and safety systems.
In October 2014, The Kerala government formed a special purpose vehicle (SPV) called Kerala Rapid Transit Corporation (KRTC) in the place of Kerala Monorail Corporation Ltd. (KMCL).
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) has been appointed as a general consultant to prepare the detailed project report (DPR)
In September 2015, a letter of intent (LoI) was submitted to Government of India (GoI) by the DMRC.
The proposed Light Metro is to be implemented as government initiative expecting a viability gap funding from the central and state government. Remaining fund is expected to be sourced internally and externally form competent agencies.
In October 2015, DMRC is in the process of preparing DPR.
On March 4, 2016, preparatory works were initiated.
In March 2017, the DPR was completed and KRTL is awaiting a final decision on the financing mode.
In November 2017, the revised DPR as per the new metro policy was submitted to the cabinet for approval.
