Karnataka Public Works, Ports & Inland Water Transport Department (KPWD) and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, India (MORTH) are planning to construct a tunnel in Karnataka, India.
The project involves the construction of a 19km tunnel connecting Mangaluru with Bengaluru. It includes the construction of roadways and a ventilation shaft, the installation of surveillance cameras, radio systems, signalling and communications systems.
KPWD appointed Geoconsult India Private Ltd (Geoconsult) towards preparing a feasibility report in the third quarter of 2015. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) evinced interest in financing the project.
The National Highways division of the PWD is co-ordinating with Geoconsult for the ongoing feasibility and geo-technical study which requires topography study in the Shiradi Ghat valley and the surroundings. The deadline to submit the report to the government is June 2016.
The consultant has proposed three alternative alignments - A, B and C. It has also recommended that alignment A will be a better option.
On July 6, 2016, project secured environment approvals, construction work is expected to commence in 2017.
In August 2016, Geoconsult received the required permission to carry out drilling tests that include study of the soil strength and underground rock strata.
Geotechnical tests results were favourable for constructing the tunnel.
KPWD and MORTH is in the process of preparing Detailed Project Report (DPR) on the project.
