KGS Aranmula International Airport Ltd (KGSAIAL) is planning to undertake the construction of Airport project in Kerala, India.

The project involves the construction of an international Greenfield airport on a 283ha area. It includes the construction of 350m wide and 4,000m long runway.

The project will be executed into two phases. The phase one of the project includes the construction of a runway, small terminal building, taxiway, isolation bay, security compound wall, drainage system, water distribution system, electricity receiving and distribution system, sewage treatment plant, and main access roads.

The phase two of the project includes the upgrade of a runway, the construction of a full-fledged terminal building, apron for bigger aircrafts, wider access roads, and required technical block.

The project includes the construction of a aircraft apron, associated airside road access, the installation of baggage handling system, underground duct and drainage systems, ground lighting and signage.

The state government has approved the project in September 2010.

A consortium of KGS Developers including Reliance-Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, and Aranmula Aviation Ltd will develop the project.

The project is facing opposition from the villagers, who are protesting against the notification issued by the Industries department declaring 202 ha of land spread across the Mallappuzhasserry, Kidangannur and Aranmula villages as an industrial area.

In August 2012, the company received planning approval from Central and State Governments for the development of the project.

In November 2013, project obtained necessary approvals from Union Ministry of Environment and Forest.

In May 2014, Environment clearance to Aranmula airport project was cancelled. As of July 2014, the project is on hold due to environmental issues.

The project is being funded through equity and debt. The equity portion accounts for around US$220 million. The debt-equity ratio is 1:1. Three banks including ICICI, IDBI and SBI have funded the debt portion.

On May 8, 2015, the defence ministry had withdrawn the no-objection certificate (NOC) for the project in the backdrop of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) cancelling the environment clearance granted to the project.

On May 27, 2015, the project approval was cancelled by the Union Civil Aviation ministry.

On July 19, 2015, Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has given the conditional approval to conduct the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study for the proposed project.

In July 2016, KGSAIAL has field a new application seeking permission to conduct the study.

On July 29, 2016, expert committee has instructed the developer to seek the opinions and suggestions of the general public on the project.

In August 2016, the Ministry of Environment and Forests has again given permission to KGS Group to carry out Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project in Aranmula, stating that the Defence Ministry had not objected to the project.

In November 2016, the government had withdrawn the in-principle sanction, a notification declaring the proposed site as an industrial area, and the decision to acquire 10 per cent equity stake in the company.The project is facing challenging the state government's decision to cancel the approvals granted by it.
