JSW Jharkhand Steel Ltd (JSW) is planning to undertake the construction an integrated steel plant in Sonahatu Block, Ranchi, Jharkhand, India.
The project involves the construction of an integrated steel plant with a production capacity of 10 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) on 1,538ha of land.
It includes the construction of a 900MW captive power plant, a beneficiation plant with a production capacity of a 29TPA, a pellet plant with a production capacity of 8MTPA, a coke oven plant with a production capacity of 6TPA, a cement plant with a production capacity of 6MTPA, a township, a water treatment plant, an Oxygen plant, a central repair shop, a tailing pond, a raw water reservoir, access roads, railway sidings, a refining unit, a melting unit, a 3X5,200m3 blast furnace, a deposition unit, a fabrication unit, a powerhouse, a substation and storage facilities, the installation of generators, transformers and equipment, and the laying of transmission lines.
In November 2005, JSW signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of Jharkhand (GoJ) for the project development.
MECON Ltd has been appointed as study consultant and Vimta Labs Ltd as environment consultant.
Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) technology for the production of liquid steel has been envisaged for the proposed project.
On May 22, 2008, GoJ approved the project, after receiving the site assessment and feasibility report from MECON.
On September 21, 2014, Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB) conducted a public hearing.
In March 2015, JSW applied for the grant of Environmental Clearance (EC) along with the final Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report and compliance of all the Terms of Reference (ToR) to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF).
In August 2016, project secured environmental clearance.
Project is in the early stage of development.
