Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) is undertaking the Jawaharlal Nehru Port SEZ development project in Maharashtra, India.
The project involves the development of a multi-product special economic zone on 1,214ha of land and being developed in phases.
The US$542 million first phase includes the development of SEZ on 277ha of land.
It includes dredging work, and the construction of an office facility, a logistic facility, access roads and other related facilities.
The project is being developed through JNPT-SPV (Special Purpose Vehicle) under the Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) mode.
Ernst & Young has been appointed as the master planner and project consultant; and Tata Consulting Engineers Limited (TCE) as the design consultant for the project.
The JNPT will issue US$365 million low-cost tax-free bonds for the development of the project. Out of US$365 million, US$273 million will be used for dredging works and remaining for development of logistics special economic zone.
The Government issued in-principal approval for the entire project in September 2010, however the planning consent for the first phase of the project was obtained in August 2011.
On August 11, 2014, the notification for setting up a SEZ was issued and on August 16, 2014, the foundation stone was laid for the project.
On December 5, 2014, JNPT secured environmental clearance. JNPT has acquired all regulatory clearances for the first phase of the project.
The Federal Government of India granted US$72 million for the construction of basic infrastructure facilities at the SEZ site.
In March 2015, L&T Infrastructure Engineering Ltd. submitted a master plan and detailed project report on the project. Site area leveling activities and the tender process for protection wall of SEZ (phase-I) have been initiated in April 2015. Later, in October 2015, 20 companies has expressed interests in opening industrial units at the project site.
JNPT has acquired all regulatory clearances.
In November 2015, tenders for the first phase infrastructure works were issued with submission deadline as July 30, 2016.
In October 2016, Al Fara’a Group has been awarded as the EPC contractor.
Spectrum Techno Consultants has been appointed as the structural engineer for infrastructural works.
Construction works on the project are underway and scheduled to be completed by the second quarter of 2018.
