Hindustan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (HSMC), ST Microelectronics (STM) and Silterra Malaysia Sdn. Bhd (Silterra), joint venture is undertaking the construction of a new chip manufacturing plant in Gujarat, India.
The project involves the construction of a chip manufacturing facility comprising two manufacturing units, each with a capacity of producing 20,000 wafers per month.
The project include the construction of a production unit, an assembling unit, a distribution unit, warehouse facilities, administrative space and other related facilities.
The plant would start making chips of size 90, 65 and 45 nanometers (NM) in size in the first phase. The second phase will see chips of 28NM being produced going down to 22NM in the third phase.
In February 2014, the project received approval from the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology of India/department of electronics and information technology (DEITY).
In September 2015, the central government approved to set up manufacturing facility.
In April 2016, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) entered into an agreement with HSMC for the project development.
HSMC received first seed investment of US$105 million for the project from Next Orbit Ventures.
Planning activities are underway.
