The Hanoi Metropolitan Railway Project Board (HRB) is undertaking the construction of a railway line in Vietnam.

The project involves the construction of an 11.5km railway line from Nam Thang Long to Tran Hung Dao including a 2.99km overhead section and 8.55km underground section. It includes the construction of three overhead stations, seven underground stations and a parking facility, the installation of signal signs, and the laying of tracks.

On November 13, 2008, the Hanoi People Committee approved the feasibility study.

On February 19, 2009, the Hanoi People Committee entered into an agreement with Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) for execution of the project.

In 2009, technical studies of the system were completed.

In March 2011, a joint venture of Oriental Consultants Co. Ltd, Katahira & Engineers International, Tonichi Engineering Consultants Inc., PADECO Co., Ltd, ALMEC Corporation, Transport Engineering Design Inc., Transport Investment and Construction Consultant JSC, Indochina Construction Consultants Co., Ltd and VCC Engineering Consultants JSC were appointed as consultants for the project.

In September 2011, ACKG Ltd was appointed as construction contractor.

In the fourth quarter of 2011, HRB submitted the detailed project report to the government authorities.

In July 2013, the project secured US$792 million from Japanese Official Development Assistance loans.

Construction work commenced in December 2013.

In November 2015, the project was put on hold citing reasons concerning with an increase in its investment capital to US$2,200 million from the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

On July 16, 2016, Government of Vietnam (GoV) announced an extension of a loan agreement thereby reviving project developmental activities.

Government of Vietnam suggested redevelopment of project plans.

In the last quarter of 2016, basic design activities underway.

In April 2017, basic design activities complete.

HRB is awaiting approval for the adjusted plans.
