Summary

Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd (HPPCL) is undertaking the Kashang hydroelectric power plant project in Himachal Pradesh, India.

The project involves the construction of an integrated hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 243MW. The project will be executed in four stages.

The first three stages will have the capacity of 195MW coming from three Pelton turbines of 65MW each. The fourth stage will have the capacity of 48MW.

The project includes the construction of a powerhouse and sub-stations and other related facilities, and the installation of turbines, transformers and generators.

The first stage of 65MW is comprising a diversion of the Kashang stream at El.2829m to an underground powerhouse located on the right bank of Satluj near Powari Village, developing a head of approximately 830m.

The second and third stages of 130MW are comprising a diversion of the Kerang stream, at El. 2872m into an underground water conductor system leading to upstream end of first stage water conductor system, augmenting the generating capacity of first stage powerhouse, using Kerang waters over the 820m head available in the first stage powerhouse.

The fourth stage of 48MW is more or less independent scheme harnessing the power potential of Kerang stream upstream of the diversion site of second stage. In this scheme, a head of approximately 300m could be utilized to develop power in an underground powerhouse located on the right bank of Kerang stream.

Hindustan Construction Company Limited, Patel Engineering and Andritz Hydro Private Ltd. have been appointed as the construction contractor for the first, second and third stage of the project, respectively.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) is providing the funds required for the construction of second and third stage.

Lahmeyer International (India) Pvt. Ltd has been appointed lead consultant in association with Lahmeyer International GmbH, Germany (Associated Consultant) as the Project Implementation Consultant for first, second and third stages of the project.

Startech Labs Pvt. Ltd has been appointed as environment consultant.

In May 2016, construction work on the first phase completed.

On August 18, 2016, HPPCL issued tender for the repair and maintenance works for the first three stages of the project with a submission deadline on September 30, 2016.

As of December 2016, construction works on second and third stage were completed and planning activities on the fourth stage are underway.
