The Government of Zimbabwe (GoZ) is undertaking the upgrade of NewZim Steel Plant project at Redcliff, in Midlands, Zimbabwe.
The project involves the refurbishment of the existing steel plant with a production capacity of 1,200,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) and the construction of a 600MW power plant. It is being implemented in two phases.
The first phase includes the refurbishment of the existing steel plant with a production capacity of 500,000TPA and the construction of a 300MW power plant and the second phase the capacity will be raised to 1,200,000TPA and a 300MW power plant.
The project includes the construction of a blast furnace, coke oven and utility plant, an oxygen plant, a lime plant, a ware house, a packing unit, an alloy unit, a storage unit, a powerhouse, a substation and other related facilities and the installation of generators, transformers, turbines, rolling and roughing mill, machinery and safety equipment.
In July 2015, Goz have negotiated terms with Essar to work on the plant after paying the required mining fees of US$400 000.
The deal of upgrading of NewZim Steel Plant projecthas been collapsed between Essar Africa Holdings Limited (EAHL) and Government of Zimbabwe (GoZ).
Government of Zimbabwe (GoZ) is searching for new developer to partner with EAHL for the development of the project.
