The Government of Sindh (GoS) is planning to build a light rail line in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan.
The project involves the construction of an 18.38km light rail line of which 3.7km will be underground and 12.92km will be elevated, while ground section would be 1.67km.
The project will include the construction of three underground stations, 10 elevated stations, a rolling stock base, operational control centers, platforms, administrative space parking and related infrastructure, the installation of signaling and safety systems, and the laying of tracks.
The GoS entered into an agreement with China Export & Credit Insurance Corporation (Sinosure) for the implementation of the project. Under the terms of contract, Sinosure will provide 60% of the total cost (US$761 million) under a 13-year Chinese loan and GoS will pay 40% (US$508 million).
The Chinese team has conducted soil investigation, site survey, traffic information study and coordinated with different Sindh government departments. They have also constituted a 50-member experts team to prepare project proposal, conduct feasibility study, prepare concept and pre-preliminary design of civil and electrical works, signaling and preparation of documents for Chinese loan.
